You want to do the thing. You might even enjoy it once you’re in it. But the moment it turns into something you have to do, the moment there’s a deadline or an expectation attached, something in you locks up.
It isn’t defiance
This experience has several names. Demand avoidance is a common one, and it is widely described among autistic and ADHD people. It’s an automatic, often anxiety-driven response to a perceived demand. The demand can come from anyone, including yourself.
Psychological reactance is a related idea: push-back when autonomy feels constrained. It’s well-documented in ADHD, and it helps explain why a self-imposed “must” can trigger the same response as an external one. Writing your own to-do list and then finding you cannot touch a single item on it is a very familiar version of this.
Laziness and stubbornness are the wrong story. This is closer to a nervous-system response than a choice. Being told, even gently, even by yourself, that you must do something can be enough to make the task feel impossible to approach.
When apps add pressure
Most productivity apps run on pressure. Deadlines. Streaks you mustn’t break. Overdue flags turning red. Reminders that nag. They are all built on one assumption: that a bit of pressure helps you act.
For a demand-avoidant brain, pressure does the opposite. It adds threat, and threat tightens the lock. The task turns red, the demand intensifies, and now you can’t go near it at all. On top of that, you feel bad for “ignoring” it. The tool meant to help has become another source of the very thing keeping you stuck.
Low demand in practice
That is the gap most productivity tools leave open. In jotsum nothing turns red. Nothing is ever “overdue”. There are no streaks to break and no notifications issuing instructions. An entry sitting on a future day is only that: there, waiting, with no judgement attached to it.
Moving something to another day costs you nothing. No penalty, no guilt mechanic implying you’ve slipped. With less pressure baked in, there is far less for the avoidance response to brace against. A task you wrote down without a “must” wrapped around it is a task you can often do in your own time, when the demand isn’t in the room.
